What is the Role of a Governor?
A governor is part of a team – The Governing Body (which includes the Headteacher). The individual governor has no power or responsibility – only the full Governing Body has.
The main aim of the Governing Body is to promote high standards and to help schools provide the best possible education for all pupils. The Governing Body should be particularly interested in such things as : · The school’s policies;
· How the school works with parents and the local community;
· The priorities of the school’s development plan;
· The way the school’s financial planning reflects its priorities;
· The values the school encourages;
· The overall balance and quality of the education offered to children; and
· The general standards of achievement.
· Work on committees and working groups;
· Check that policies and plans are having the desired effect;· Develop a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the school.
· The governing body should make certain that parents and others in the local community are kept informed about the way that the school is developing. The governing body should also make certain that the views and concerns of parents and the local community are taken into account when school decisions are made.
