Welcome to Ferrybridge Infant School  Website

Welcome to Ferrybridge Infants School

Dear Parents,

We would like to welcome you to Ferrybridge Infant School and hope your association with the school will be happy and successful.

At our school we aim to provide a stimulating, caring and purposeful environment in which every child feels happy, confident and secure. We believe in developing children, intellectually, emotionally, socially, spiritually and physically. We have high expectations and set high standards for the children. They are encouraged to have high expectations of themselves and their work and to become confident, caring and responsible members of the school.

Staff  work hard to ensure that the children have a broad and balanced curriculum, which meet the needs of each and every individual child.

We believe very strongly in a meaningful partnership between parents and school. School and parents need to work closely together and support each other in order to help your child develop their full potential. We believe parents should be fully involved in every aspect of their child’s education and are welcome to come into school at any time.

SCHOOL HOURS

Main School              9:00am to 12:00pm             1:15pm to 3:15pm

    Nursery                    9:00am to 11:30am            12:45pm to 3:15pm

We provide a broad and balanced curriculum taught through cross-curricular topics, which are theme based. These offer practical, first hand, exciting and stimulating experiences whenever possible. Out of school educational visits play an integral part of each topic to engage the children and stimulate their learning.

School organisation

We are an Infant school providing education for children from 3 + to 7 years.

The children in Foundation (Nursery and Reception) are working on the “Foundation Stage Curriculum” which is the curriculum for Early Years. A lot of emphasis is placed on structured play activities and helping children to become independent learners.

Nursery                   3+ & 4+ years                 Year 1  5-6 years

                (Lower Foundatation)

                Reception                   4+ & 5 years                   Year 2 6 - 7 years

                 (Upper Foundation)

Children in Year 1 and 2 are working at Key Stage 1 of the National Curriculum. The school week consists of 21 hours working time, not including registration, assemblies and playtimes.

The children are arranged in year group classes wherever possible although there is sometimes a mixed aged class depending on numbers in the school. There are no more than 30 children in each class.

The Curriculum

All children are offered the core curriculum subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, ICT and Religious Education  and the foundation subjects of Technology, History, Geography, Music, Art, and Physical Education.

Literacy and numeracy are taught every day, in whole class and ability groups.

The school has a fully equipped ICT suite and classroom computers, which are all networked to the Internet. All classes have interactive whiteboards which are used to deliver lessons in a fun and exciting way.Access to the internet will be by adult demonstration with supervised access to approved on-line materials.

Sex Education

The Governors do not consider formal sex education at the school to be desirable or necessary because of the age range of the pupils.  The school’s policy is to respond informally on an individual basis to each child’s natural inquisitiveness and to give such answers and guidance as is felt appropriate to the child’s own age and needs and to the wishes of the child’s parents.

Collective Worship

The religious education taught at the school follows the Wakefield agreed syllabus and is available for parents to see. Parents can withdraw their child from all or part of the Religious Education and Collective Worship and any parent exercising the right of withdrawal should discuss the matter with the Headteacher.

The school also involves itself in charitable work and service to the local community.

Homework

All children in school are expected to do homework. Reading is an important part of homework and children should practise their reading daily. The children have a reading diary, which keeps a record of books read and progress made. Other homework could include contributing to school displays or specific tasks set by the teacher.

            cycle shorts               wide strapped vest

Footwear

Children wear indoor shoes to help protect the fabric of the building. They should be black pumps only. Slippers are not permitted as they are often ill fitting.

Discipline

Children are expected to behave in a reasonable and caring and tolerant way towards other children and adults. They are encouraged to develop a responsible and caring concern for the whole of the school environment and the wider community. Through this policy we hope to promote a positive attitude leading towards self -discipline.

The school operates a positive behaviour approach and rewards are given for good behaviour. Children are involved in agreeing the school and class rules. The school has an anti bullying policy and bullying in any form is not tolerated.

Parents are contacted immediately if there are concerns about their child’s behaviour. You will be asked to sign the home- school agreement, which outlines school and parental responsibilities.

Special Needs

Children with special needs are identified as early as possible so that individual education plans for the children can be written and outside agencies can be involved. They work within the normal classroom situation, but may have additional support from classroom assistants.

Children with disabilities

The school has a duty to provide support for children with disabilities and the 'Disabilitiy Accessibility Plan' ensures procedures are in place to increase the access to the school for pupils and parents with disabilities.

Medicines

Staff are unable to administer any medication. Medicines that need to be taken three times a day can be given before and after school. Arrangements need to be made with the school for yourself or a representative to come to school to administer any medication your child may need in the middle of the day.

Holidays

Taking your child on holiday during term time could result in them missing complete units of work and you will appreciate that is a gap in your child’s education. We would request that you do not take children out of school during term time, however, we appreciate that this is not always possible due to work commitments.

Parent Helpers

Parent helpers are always welcome in school, working alongside the class teacher or with small groups or individuals. ‘Mothers of Ferrybridge’ is  a committed group of parents who come and help in school on a regular basis. They make resources, listen to children read and help wherever they can. If you can spare some time and would like to help, please let us know.
